ABRAHAM CRUZVILLEGAS:

The 1st Intergalactic Summit of Independent Art Spaces

opening: 11 Sept. 2020, 6pm

visiting: 11.09 – 16.10.2020

The Summit is a proposal thought of in 2019 that makes so much more sense in 2020.

Abraham Cruzvillegas thrives on improvisation and instability, on conjuring collective constructions and on transforming collected objects into large environments, in the making of which he is never alone. For this occasion, and with our assistance, Abraham has invited artist-run spaces from various countries, the great majority of which have responded positively, to send us instructions for a group exhibition of group exhibitions.

Therefore, sketches and measurements were sent our way, a movie script made by 70 authors was sent, 150 photos were proposed as lottery tickets, several performances were declared open to interpretation, a list of names had to be spray-painted onto banners, a list of slogans had to be hand-painted onto old clothes, a know-it-all robot was made from scraps, b/w film photos were taken and so much more.

As we share the risk of totally flunking it, we take comfort in knowing this is merely the 1st Summit. We are grateful to all those that opened up to Abraham's and our invitation and have entrusted us with their ideas. We did our best to follow your precise or loose instructions with our tools and hands, with the transparent intention to interpret your ideas with sincerity and trustworthy, with good humor and mood.

------------

Inspired by the civic-minded and resourceful Ajusco neighborhood in Mexico City where he grew up, Abraham Cruzvillegas creates sculptures, films, and installations that demonstrate the interconnectedness of people and things.

A student of Gabriel Orozco, Cruzvillegas appropriated the concept of autoconstrucción, which has in turn yielded different approaches such as autodestrucción and autoconfusión. In 2015, his project Empty Lot took over the Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, London. Other recent projects include: Hi, How Are You, Gonzo? The Contemporary Austin, United States; Aspen Art Museum, USA (2019); Autorreconstrucción: Social Tissue, Kunsthaus Zürich, Switzerland (2018); Sensory Spaces 12: Abraham Cruzvillegas, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam, Netherlands (2017); Autoconstrucción, Museo Jumex, Mexico City and Museo Amparo, Puebla, Mexico (2014); The Autoconstrucción Suites, Haus der Kunst, Munich, Germany (2014) and The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, United States (2013).
