Sandwich

Jin Ningning converts Sandwich into an elaborate system whose shutter can be any visitor, through their weight but also their courage to take a creative leap – for real. He is aware that not many will take this leap. In any case, the public is here not just an active participant, but becomes the actual reason for which some works will exist and others won't.

The two spaces, inside and outside, are fully co-dependent: nothing is made in Chocolat if there is no action in Sandwich. At the same time, nothing gets destroyed inside if the destruction is not commanded from outdoors. The system has the capacity to paint, seemingly without the intervention of the artist. Ningning only builds the complex apparatus, the levers and connexions between activator and pigment, while the final creative gesture remains mechanical, yet not random.

Glitter, ink, resin, plastic bottles, pierced t-shirts, inflatable figures, electric motors. Beyond the variety of elements of which Ningning's system is made of, the device relies on a simple decision: to leap into the void or not.

Jin Ningning (b. 1980)

Jin Ningning’s career began at the outskirt of contemporary art, as he is a veteran in the independent comic scene that is much more active online than offline in China. He published his own book Stinkykinky 0.5_JNN in 2012 and started to show the results of his experiments with color in galleries, art fairs and other art spaces.

In 2017, Jin Ningning participated Taikang Space’s Drawing Pogo curated by Zhou Yi, who tried to bring about a new experience of viewing art by integrating elements like images, installations, laser beams and live DJ’s into an art exhibition, and therefore to expand the definition of “drawing” itself.

By mixing with everyday objects in forms of subversive assemblages and spatial installations often hilarious and challenging to the highbrow taste, his unique handling of the digital imagery wires projection and printing (the commonly known methods of digital presentation) to the touch and feel of the social and emotional life. Jin Ningning’s art works expands as well as un-familiarizes what is expected of the digital medium.

His works were shown in solo and group exhibitions at Star Gallery Beijing, LISTE Art Fair Basel, C5 Art Beijing, PSA Shanghai, V&A Museum, Centre Pompidou, and others. He lives and works in Shanghai.

This event is part of the Project “The Great Romania – China Friendship Cafeteria”.
